Is Montreal a weekend trip or a long day?
Tourisme Montreal puts downtown to downtown at about 5.5 hours on the 401, excluding stops. That is long enough that most groups treat it as a weekend. We design the quote around arrival at your hotel in the evening or early afternoon, then a pickup for the return when you are ready to leave.
What changes at this distance
Compared with a short run like Toronto to Barrie, a Montreal booking involves more moving pieces:
- Nights away, with the driver and vehicle either staying nearby or arranged separately.
- Luggage for everyone, well beyond a small day bag.
- Rest stops spaced along the 401.
- Possible different return times or a different return route.
Driver rest and waiting arrangements are details we confirm in the quote. We make no claims about rules on your behalf. We set out the plan and the hours we have assumed so you can see exactly what is being quoted.
Reading the route
Tourisme Montreal says the 401 runs from Toronto through Kingston, which is roughly the halfway point, then Cornwall, the last large Ontario town before Quebec. After the border the 401 becomes Highway 20. At Vaudreuil-Dorion the advice is to stay straight rather than taking Highway 30 north, then follow the signs for Centre-ville. Highway 2 runs alongside the 401, and ONroute plazas appear roughly 80 km apart, which makes rest stops easy to plan.
There is also a scenic detour: the Thousand Islands Parkway between Gananoque and Butternut Bay near Brockville. It adds time but suits groups who want the trip to be part of the holiday.
Choosing a vehicle
| Trip type | Suggested vehicle | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Couple or two to three colleagues | Executive sedan | Comfortable for a long stretch |
| Family or small team, up to 6 | Luxury SUV | Room for suitcases |
| Group of 8 to 10 | Stretch limousine | Social seating, limited luggage |
| Larger party | Party bus or coach | Quote on request, see group transportation |
Destinations in Montreal
Tourisme Montreal highlights Old Montreal, Notre-Dame Basilica, the Mount Royal lookout at Kondiaronk and the Old Port with its observation wheel. We do not have partnerships with any of them, but they are common reasons to book. Give us the address of the hotel and anything else on your list, and we plan the drop-off in the quote.
If you are weighing Ottawa instead, see Toronto to Ottawa.
One-way or return
A one-way trip with a flight or train home means the vehicle makes the return drive alone, and the quote reflects that. A return booking keeps the same driver and vehicle with your group, which suits weekend stays. A multi-stop variant, for example Toronto, Kingston and Montreal, is possible, and each overnight changes the schedule.
What to include in your enquiry
- Dates, and which day you want to arrive.
- Where the group is staying in Montreal.
- Number of passengers and suitcases.
- Whether the return is with us or by other means.
- Wanted stops along the 401.
Our quote form takes all of that, and the phone is +1 647 477 1520. Traffic around Toronto and on approach to Montreal can change timing, so we plan with that in mind and confirm the plan with you.
